this week I was shopping at my favorite store, Big Lots, and I came across another interesting item. I found chips made of beans. The chips were a new take on the typical tortilla chip. Instead of using flour or corn, Beanitos uses beans. The nutritional facts stated that they were high in fiber, antioxidents, and protein. I thought it was interesting so it was worth the two bucks to try. I brought the chips home this weekend for my family to try. I didn’t tell them that they were made of beans or that anything was different and surprisingly they really liked them. I told them the chips were made of beans and they said that they would have never guessed it. I tried the chips for myself and they were really good. I could tell they were a little different than the “normal” tortilla chip, but with some salsa and queso, you couldn’t tell a difference.
y know from my welcome post that my first taco was from Taco Bell and I loved it. I didn’t know what I was missing out on for so long. For several months after discovering my love for Taco Bell, I ate there a lot. It was my favorite fast food restaurant to go to. Time went on and I started eating less and less Taco Bell and I realized recently I haven’t had it in a really long time. So, for dinner one day this week I went to taco bell and got my normal order: two crunchy tacos with just cheese and two Cinnabon delights. That’s when I came to the sad realization that I am not really a big f
an of Taco Bell anymore. I ate my two half filled tacos and my overly sweet Cinnabon’s and I was disappointed. The food wasn’t bad, it tasted like normal Taco Bell, but it also didn’t taste great. I’ve tried so much amazing Mexican food over the past few years and I think that the standards for my tacos are a little higher now. But, if you’re still really craving some cheap and fast Mexican food, Taco Bell will do in a pinch.
fe to say that most people in America have tried or at least heard of Coca-Cola. Many consider it an American classic, but there is a different Coke that is showing up and people are really liking it. Mexican Coca-Cola is still owned by the same corporation, but it is processed and bottled in Mexico.
A scientific analysis of Mexican Coke reported no standard sugars in the sample. So that leaves the question, Why do some people prefer Mexican Coke? The answer to that is America is a little spoiled. The Coca-Cola that Mexico exports to American is made with cane sugar, but not all the Coca-Cola’s actually sold in Mexico are. I have to say they came out pretty good for my first time making homemade cookies. I wanted to try something a little different that didn’t involve hot oil because I wanted my nieces to help. When I went searching for recipes of different churro like treats I came across a bunch of different t
ype of cinnamon-y, sugary desserts to make that involved no frying. I thought making homemade cookies would be a fun experience for my little nieces and I’d get some yummy cookies out of it. ekend I tried a new restaurant that popped up in Prairieville. Agave Blue is advertised as a tequila and taco bar. I don’t really care so much for the tequila as I do the tacos. If a restaurant is specializing in tacos I have to try it. My family and one of my close friends decided to go out for dinner there and see if it was any good. I have to say it was great and both my parents and my friend really loved it too. To start off our meal we were given the standard complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered queso too because who doesn’t love queso. The salsa was fresh, delicious and very spicy. Even my dad thought it was spicy and that’s saying something. I ordered the beef tacos with beans and the beans were the closest you could get to authentic. Overall, this restaurant was amazing with good food and a good atmosphere.
f any of y’all have even eaten from a food truck, but if you haven’t it is a must. This past weekend I went to the Flea Market of Louisiana in Prairieville, La and they had a taco truck there. To say the least, I was very excited. The people running the truck were very friendly and pretty funny. I ordered two beef tacos and they were served minutes later, so service was great too. When I got my tacos I was immediately excited because these tacos are as close to authentic as I could get without going south of the border. They were small and served in a soft shell. d beef like you would normally expect from American tacos, but it was finely chopped beef. To top off it off there was just a little bit of white onions, lime, and cilantro. They were incredible! If you ever see a Mexican food truck of any kind I would highly suggest trying it out. Most of the time the people that are running the truck grew up eating and cooking the food they are serving you so you will get a little taste of their culture.
ou refer back to my last post you can hear all about the taco night I had last Wednesday. We had lots of food for dinner that night, but one item definitely stood out. That item is Guacachip. As the bag advertises it is a “guacamole chip – with real avocado”! So basically this chip is an all in one deal, chip and dip altogether. I was at my favorite store, Big Lots, when I came across these chips. I’m personally not a huge fan of guacamole, but I know all my friends are, so I decided to buy them. (And they were only two bucks!!) I came back home, we ripped the bag opened and we tried them. And to our surprise, they tasted absolutely nothing like guacamole. We ate a few and we decided they taste just like the Cool Ranch flavor of Doritos, except they were just green. So, were they amazing guacamole chips… no, but they weren’t bad chips and we did wind up eating the whole bag.
making it halfway through the week I decided to have a taco night Wednesday for me and my friends. I went to Rouse’s and got everything a college kid can afford for a taco night: refried beans, taco shells, Spanish rice, taco toppings, chips, avocados for guacamole, salsa and my personal favorite Jarritos soda. I cooked everything up and I have to admit I did use a taco seasoning packet because this girl can afford all the authentic spices. (Hopefully one day!) I added a little flair to the taco meat by adding some cooked down onions and bell peppers. If I do say so myself, I think all the food came out pretty good.
I love tacos and Mexican food, but I honestly really like cooking for my friends. We call it family night. We all get together and hang out and eat a big meal. I love that food can bring people together and I especially love that this time is was Mexican food.

One thing that stood out to me in both of the Mexican markets is the amount of people making phone calls. I was with my friend who is Mexican when I went to both stores and I asked her why so many people were calling. She told me about how expensive it is to make international calls and when they are in the store they can call their loved ones back home for free. I found this shocking because I was ignorant on this particular struggle many people right in my town face. So, yes, these markets are great for getting new exotic foods, but they also serve a greater purpose.
