Hi Y’all! Earlier this week I was shopping at my favorite store, Big Lots, and I came across another interesting item. I found chips made of beans. The chips were a new take on the typical tortilla chip. Instead of using flour or corn, Beanitos uses beans. The nutritional facts stated that they were high in fiber, antioxidents, and protein. I thought it was interesting so it was worth the two bucks to try. I brought the chips home this weekend for my family to try. I didn’t tell them that they were made of beans or that anything was different and surprisingly they really liked them. I told them the chips were made of beans and they said that they would have never guessed it. I tried the chips for myself and they were really good. I could tell they were a little different than the “normal” tortilla chip, but with some salsa and queso, you couldn’t tell a difference.
Hi Y’all! Some of you may know from my welcome post that my first taco was from Taco Bell and I loved it. I didn’t know what I was missing out on for so long. For several months after discovering my love for Taco Bell, I ate there a lot. It was my favorite fast food restaurant to go to. Time went on and I started eating less and less Taco Bell and I realized recently I haven’t had it in a really long time. So, for dinner one day this week I went to taco bell and got my normal order: two crunchy tacos with just cheese and two Cinnabon delights. That’s when I came to the sad realization that I am not really a big fan of Taco Bell anymore. I ate my two half filled tacos and my overly sweet Cinnabon’s and I was disappointed. The food wasn’t bad, it tasted like normal Taco Bell, but it also didn’t taste great. I’ve tried so much amazing Mexican food over the past few years and I think that the standards for my tacos are a little higher now. But, if you’re still really craving some cheap and fast Mexican food, Taco Bell will do in a pinch.
Hi Y’all! If you refer back to my last post you can hear all about the taco night I had last Wednesday. We had lots of food for dinner that night, but one item definitely stood out. That item is Guacachip. As the bag advertises it is a “guacamole chip – with real avocado”! So basically this chip is an all in one deal, chip and dip altogether. I was at my favorite store, Big Lots, when I came across these chips. I’m personally not a huge fan of guacamole, but I know all my friends are, so I decided to buy them. (And they were only two bucks!!) I came back home, we ripped the bag opened and we tried them. And to our surprise, they tasted absolutely nothing like guacamole. We ate a few and we decided they taste just like the Cool Ranch flavor of Doritos, except they were just green. So, were they amazing guacamole chips… no, but they weren’t bad chips and we did wind up eating the whole bag.
Hi Y’all! I’m going to take you guys to another Mexican Market with me. This one is La Tienda in Prairieville, La. This store was a bit bigger than the last one I visited and offered a lot of different things. They had a variety of traditional Mexican candies, sodas, and an assortment of different snacks. Then further in the store, they had more of grocery items. Some of them were typical things that you would see at an American grocery store, but they also had some very interesting things I have never seen before. Some of the different things I saw was pickled date palm and Pacaya palm in brine. (Pacaya palm is a species of palm tree) This is one of the many reasons I love going to Mexican markets, you can find new things you can’t find anywhere else.
One thing that stood out to me in both of the Mexican markets is the amount of people making phone calls. I was with my friend who is Mexican when I went to both stores and I asked her why so many people were calling. She told me about how expensive it is to make international calls and when they are in the store they can call their loved ones back home for free. I found this shocking because I was ignorant on this particular struggle many people right in my town face. So, yes, these markets are great for getting new exotic foods, but they also serve a greater purpose.
Hi Y’all! This week I want to talk about a few of the Mexican markets or grocery stores that I have visited. The first one I want to tell you guys about is El Guero Market. It is in Prairieville, La. This is a pretty small grocery store, but they had a lot to offer.
The store had a variety of traditional, fresh Hispanic foods such as goat cheese, flan, and tres leches. There was also a lot of items that you would see at an American grocery store such as flour, vegetable oil, and hot chocolate, but it was a bit different. All these typical items packages were in written in Spanish.
These stores were not meant for people like me, a southern, white girl, to shop at. When we went to the store they were very busy and just about everyone in there except me and my friend was Hispanic. We did get a few funny looks, but luckily my friend knew one of the employees there. We wound up getting a delicious watermelon popsicle and a piece of tres leches (my absolute favorite dessert).
Overall, my experience at this grocery store was a good one and I definitely want to go back. I’d like to get some authentic Hispanic food for a Mexican dinner one night. If you see a Mexican market near your home I encourage you to go in and experience something a little different, you might find some great, new food right in your own neighborhood.
Hey Y’all! Being from South Louisiana the Mexican culture has always been around, although it has been altered and mixed in with the unique Cajun culture that defines much of Louisiana. So, the Mexican culture has been around me, but honestly I never paid much attention to it. I’ve always been a picky eater and I still am today, but my love for Mexican food bloomed one day at a very unlikely place… Taco Bell.
Taco Bell is probably the most Americanized Mexican food available to anyone and everyone, but this is where I had my first taco at 18 years old and fell in love. My best friend (who is Mexican) convinced me to try something new and I am so glad she did. Now having a few years of experience under my belt I would have to say I am a bit of a Mexican food junkie. My favorite thing to do it try a new Mexican restaurant every time I go out to eat. Through this blog I plan on taking you with me through Louisiana’s Mexican restaurants, food trucks and anything else we happen to stumble upon.
